Church/Chapels
AGIOS DEMETRIOS
In the village's main square stands the Church that is dedicated to the memory of St. Demetrios, which was made in the 19 th century. The date 1857 is recorder upon a stone at the temple's north entrance. The date 1864 is also recorder upon the windows.
The church's steeple is twice the height of the church and has two bells and it is made out of well-made stones. The steeple's construction is earlier and different from that of the church, where the stones were used in their natural state.
Inside the church is very beautiful. The icon-screen is chiselled and decorated by icons of 1800-1900 AD. The facade of the women's loft, which was made at a latter stage, bears frescoes with the 12 apostles that were created in the last decade. Worth mentioning is the "Apokathilosi" (Christ's removal from the Cross), a -quite old -silken work embroidered with gold.
The first country church, "Agios Georgios"
The great martyr and Triumphant Saint George , patron saint of the Christians in the Maroni community. The inhabitants identify with the Saint's entity. This is witnessed by the presence of the Saint's small country church that exists in the village's cemetery, which according to the researchers was built in the 17 th century. This was the first church of the village when it was built in the "Karagiannis" venue, south of today's cemetery. Because then the village was infested by a cholera epidemic, Saint George sent a vision to an inhabitant of the village and proposed that the village should me transferred further north, obviously so as to protect the village from the epidemic. This was indeed done. The village was transferred to its present location and none of the inhabitants was hurt.
The big church
After the village was relocated, the need for a new church was slowly generated.
Thus, in 1878, the construction of the new church started -inside today's village -so as to better serve the community's inhabitants. The new church is dedicated to the Saint and great martyr George the "Tropaioforos" (Triumphant, Trophy Bearer).
The making of the church lasted several years because of the era's insufficient means and the financial difficulties that existed.
The asperges (sanctification ceremony) of Saint George's church was conducted in November of 1901. The concern for the care and maintenance of the church continued until -a hundred years later -a radical, external renovation was performed.
It celebrates on the 23 rd of April.
"Agioi Anargyroi" country church
Apart from the church and the country church of St. George in Maroni, there is also the country church of "Agioi Anargyroi" (the saints Cosmas, Damianos, Kyros, and Ioannis), which celebrates on the 1 st of July and 1 st of November. This country church is located south-east of the village. It was built in 1948 upon very old ruins and -according to existing information -an old settlement once stood there. The cornerstone was placed by Papaeleftherios Papademetriou, after a vision one of his fellow villagers had that related to the Saints' wish to have a church built there.
The first Mass was conducted on the 1 st of November 1950 by the dear departed, reverend Papaeleftherios Papademetriou.
Agios Nicolaos
Moreover, a ruined church exists in the "Petrera" region, the foundations of which were discovered after excavations; it is said that it was dedicated to St. Nicolas. Later on a small platform was raised there by the faithful, in which one can light a candle and a small icon of the Saint stands. This region seems to be of remarkable archaeological value.
