Tourist Growth
The village's geographical position and also its traditional architecture with old, stone-made houses, the verdant areas, and the distance of two kilometres from the sea, naturally drew the attention of Cyprus's local inhabitants as well as of the thousands of its foreign visitors. Indeed, for some years now, many have been dealing with the buying and selling of estates and houses in the area.
The interest and the vision of some -to turn this into a reality -has played an important role in the development of tourism. Individuals, which maintain real estate agencies in the neighbouring village of Zygi, have offered the outmost aid in the development of tourism by constructing building complexes that made it easy for the tourist to enjoy the region's beauty. One known building complex in the region is the "Emerald Coast" between Zygi and Maroni. Of course there are several individuals occupied with similar tourism-related activities that positively contribute in this sector.
Several foreigners show interest in buying real estate but there are also quite a significant number of foreigners that bought old houses and repaired them without altering their traditional architecture.
Others bought building plots in residential areas and constructed quite beautiful houses based on the village's recent architectural character. Moreover, there are Cypriots from other regions that bought small holdings within and outside the "re-allotment of land" region and constructed permanent residences or country houses.
Another factor that seems to have aided the development of tourism is the broad road network that was created by the various "re-allotment of land" plans that took place -and still do -in the region, as well as the Vasiliko - Pentaschinos water-supply project that covers a large number of agricultural land segments. Creating various seasonal plantations with vegetables, etc., as well as planting trees, provides a tangible specimen of the green and the enticing View that the region offers.
For all of the above, a basic factor seems to be the large-scale activity, developed by the President and the local land authority in general -as well as various other local agents -in several sectors and in various infrastructure projects. By grading building plots of 14400 sq. ft., expanding the residential zones, granting permissions for the transfer of water, for road construction as well as their paving with asphalt, they have positively contributed and contribute still to the development of tourism and generally to the village's development as a whole.
Furthermore, it has been agreed that the local land authority will purchase privately owned, old buildings within the village and -with the proper arrangements -they are to be used as offices and for whatever else is needed by every current local land authority in Maroni.
A remarkable instance, which has contributed positively to the exploitation and the development of the region in general, is the raising of new buildings of traditional architecture made with local stone.
One part of the building is used as a residence. The other part, specially modulated since the beginning of its construction, is used as a clinic. The "Maroni Petra Clinic", as it is called, started its history in 1984 and is located by the coastal road between Zygi and Mazotos in the "Gialos" region.
Another field, which has aided -and still aids -to the development of the region in general, is that of the services offered by the private sector in the various areas, such as the operation of restaurants, taverns, coffee-houses, and other areas for recreational purposes.
The regular publishing of the -by now well established -local newspaper "MARONI NEWS" by the village's British inhabitant every two months, offers its own contribution to the updating on the various developments in the village and in the region.
